About Sam

Sam Martin is an artist and writer from the New England seacoast, currently living in New Hampshire. Her work is inspired by the whimsical woodlands, mountains, lakes, oceans, and forests that surround her, as well as the main characters of her life: her two daughters, her lobsterman, and the beloved dogs she has loved and lost.

Her imagination is also shaped by her not-so-quiet neighbors, including the dumpster buddies (a family of raccoons), rascally squirrels, a raven couple, meddlesome deer, a hungry gopher, and a group of party-loving bats who race through her attic at all hours of the night. These everyday moments of wildness, humor, and tenderness find their way into her art and stories.

About Howluna

Howluna began one night when Sam’s daughter, Sierra, then six years old, was thinking about her dog, Talli, who had passed away. She imagined that Nala, their living dog, would sneak out at night and visit him. From that simple, heartfelt idea, something profound took shape. Together, Sam and Sierra built a story filled with magic, comfort, and love, imagining a place where dogs are never truly gone.
