These purple bearded irises are my favorite first sign of spring in New Hampshire. If you’ve ever stood next to them in late May, you may have noticed that they smell exactly like grape soda. Every morning when they’re in bloom, the first thing I do is go outside and breathe them in before my day starts. I painted this one to bottle those moments and that nostalgic scent.
